What do you know about TMJ dentistry? Do you know what you can do if you have problems with your TMJ? Similarly, do you know why it’s important to address issues with your TMJ?
Sadly, many people with TMJ problems don’t know what’s causing their discomfort. Fortunately, there are quite a few things you can watch for, including frequent headaches, pain behind your ear, a clicking or popping sound, the inability to open or close your jaw entirely, and even stiff jaw muscles. These issues occur because your TMJ (or temporomandibular joint) is the joint that connects your jaw to your skull. In other words, when you have TMJ problems, you’re likely to experience these types of issues.
Fortunately, if you have a problem with your TMJ, there are a few options you can consider. For instance, our dentist may give you conservative self-treatments to start, such as jaw exercises or a slight change to your diet. Similarly, if you grind your teeth at night, you may be given advice or a dental appliance to resolve the problem since teeth grinding can lead to TMJ issues.
Depending on your unique needs, more invasive options may need to be considered.
If you experience any of the symptoms related to TMJ problems, please don’t hesitate to make an appointment with our dentist, Dr. Michael Sanchez, DDS.
