Do you have pain or tenderness in your jaw? Perhaps it is difficult or painful to chew. Is it difficult to open or close your mouth? Do you have pain around your ears? If you deal with these symptoms consistently, you may need to be seen for a temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ disorder. This is also sometimes referred to as TMD.

The precise cause of TMJ disorder can be difficult to determine, however, your dentist, Dr. Michael Sanchez, DDS, can discuss possible causes, as well as solutions for your particular case. TMD is sometimes linked to bruxism (chronic grinding of teeth–typically at night while sleeping). As each case is highly personalized, it is vital for you to see your dentist at Renaissance Dental as soon as possible.

There are some things you can do to try and relieve some of your symptoms while you wait for your appointment. Get enough sleep, to reduce stress and potentially lower inflammation in your body. Chronic stress is often linked to both TMJ disorder and bruxism, and reducing your stress levels is also beneficial to your overall health. When you do sleep, try to sleep on your back. Your pillow should be of the right firmness to keep your head, shoulders, and neck in alignment, and soft enough to allow your muscles to relax and rest.

At Renaissance Dental, we offer TMJ treatments to better allow for your mouth and jaw comfort and your oral health. If you suspect you have TMJ and you are in Owasso, Oklahoma, schedule an appointment with your dentist at Renaissance Dental by calling 918-272-0707.
