Have you recently suffered an oral accident or injury that has left you with a tooth too far damaged to be saved? If so, a tooth extraction may be required to ensure the broken tooth does not lead to a serious infection. If you do need a tooth extraction, begin planning for the treatment and recovery time.

The first thing you will need to do is to remove any bad habits in your life that continue to damage your teeth. This includes smoking and chewing tobacco. If you cannot stop these bad activities, at least remove them from your life for up to 48 hours before surgery and 48 hours after surgery. This is done to ensure your mouth can effectively heal during that time.

Make sure to get plenty of rest to recover. Also, use ice packs to reduce any inflammation and heat packs to reduce pain. If medications are prescribed by your dentist, do not increase the dosage, and only use exactly as instructed to. Follow all guidelines set forth by your dentist and do not eat or drink anything until your anesthesia has fully worn off.
